It was Staff Day yesterday and I tried to audioblog part of it. Forget it. It was too loud for me to hear the prompts. Just as it happened at Splash. I was home by 11 PM and now, after a funny call from JP from the boxes at Monte Carlo's Grand Prix - impossible to have a conversation with the loud noise of the cars in the background but good to hear the fun in his voice, he's enjoying every minute of it - I have to get ready to go pick up Pilar at the airport. She is coming back today. Having her back is wonderful but realizing that she has been gone for a year and a half and that that's all it took for her life to change in such a horrible way makes her coming back bittersweet.
Yesterday I had lunch with Blanca, who is heading back to Europe today. The other Blanca is flying back to London today. And Miguel Angel is arriving from Spain. Guess the airports could stay in business just with the people I know.
Yesterday Blanca, referring to her recent relocation, said something about needing to be in a place and being aware you are in that place, instead of always thinking about all the other places who could be at instead. The reasoning spoke to me as I realized this is the very first time in my life I don't want to be somewhere else. I've lived in several countries and it's not like I have not enjoyed myself, but I certainly was aware that I was not going to stay and that, for that matter, I wouldn't have wanted to stay anyways. And now I do not have that feeling anymore. I want to travel, sure, but mostly I want to stay. Guess I am home, finally. Gotta go.

By the way, I am not liking James Frey's book that much. His little macho attitude, though attractive at some very primitive level, is pretty tiring after a while and I only read one third of the book so far. And his writing style is tiring too. Great for an essay, way to gimmicky for a book.

Now I am engulfed in another book I can't put down A million little pieces by James Frey. So far I love it, except for those silly capitalized nouns. I am now reading a couple of articles about him, one in the New York Observer, another on the Gawker website. What I really should be doing is getting up, eating something, getting some water to pass my lips, hopping on the rebounder and taking care of a dozen things on my to do list. All this can wait, of course.

11:53 AM

I had two plans for yesterday evening: a birthday party for a one-year old and out for a drink at some country music joint (in NYC!) with a colleague. But I worked until 10.30 PM and by then it was too late for either of them. So I got to stay home, where I did not even bother turning on the tv so I could quietly go back to my book. And what a book it is. The author, Dani Shapiro , will be at Housing Works for a reading next month and I will be there, clapping till my hands are raw.

The night shift ended early so I had dinner with a bunch of friends in Brooklyn plus a midnight walk on Brooklyn Heights Promenade. A great place to live if one could only bear the thought of leaving Manhattan and a 212 phone number.
Now it's tome to go back to Family History , a book I bought today and started to read in the short while I was home before heading to Brooklyn. It is gripping and I might be looking into a long long sleepless night.

I am fascinated, as I have been for several years now, by a website created by relatives of suicide victims . I browse the pictures and I can't help but be drawn to some of them. I follow the links, read the memorials, look at the pictures. And think these are real people.

2:48 AM

So while my husband was running around with a couple of Presidents and the Prince of Spain, what was I doing? Falling in love with John Travolta as he was chatting away with Oprah. There must be something to Scientology if it has produced the two best, most endearing and most admirable men in show biz: Travolta and Tom Cruise. There's also Paul Newman, of course, but Scientology was not around when he was big.
Other than blowing kisses at the TV set, I also went out for some shopping. Tomorrow, as usual, I'll go back and return more than half of it.

Had a little party at home on Friday evening. Some 8 or 9 of us had finger food, plenty of red wine and a great bottle of vanilla vodka. I had a good time, though by 3 am I was too tired to even get to the bedroom, and this is a NYC apartment, with everything just a few feet away. Saturday I called Melissa, she was not there, so I just stayed home, and slept, most of the day. I only ventured out for some tapas with Debra well into the evening. I am not sure what is going on or not going on but there's not a lot of people out, and it's not just the Memorial day weekend. Could be the economy, could be the terror threats ... I would bet on the economy.
And today's Sunday and I haven't been out yet, though I will be meeting Debra and a friend of hers in a while. We are going to see an off Broadway play:Our lady of 121th street .

Back from a housewarming party. It was OK but then one of the most boring people on earth showed up and I just had to leave. I know, I know, she is a good person, there's nothing wrong with her and I certainly have nothing against her, except that I probably have more in common with a Japanese sumo wrestler or even an African mother of eight. It' s amazing how little you can have in common with another human being, beside the basic human "beingness". I have yet to find one subject matter where we could vaguely come to an agreement. She says white and my body screams black. She says black and all I can see is white. That's just the way it is. Given that it's really about incompatibility and that the dislike is mutual, I think it is best for me to just get out of the way.
I am sort of tired, but I need to say something about yesterday ...
I especially liked one of the doctors - a short guy who probably had the worst case of juvenile acne ever, with an easy smile and a sweet personality. I liked the fact that he was not a bullshitter, and that he admitted that sometimes there is nothing you can do short of being born again. He will definitely see me at his practice now that I am shopping for a dermatologist.
The other doctor was striking, very tall, thin, dark with deep set blue eyes. Way too handsome for comfort, or so I thought at the beginning. He was also very cocky, and God knows I fall for cockiness. I was sitting there, first row, so I was just a step away from him. It took me a while but I managed to force myself into thinking he was not that hot after all and it worked. Suddenly I could listen to what he said without all sort of impure thoughts crowding my mind. Nah, actually, this is not totally true, he is indeed striking, and friendly, and cocky, but somehow I did not find him particularly attractive. A little shallow, a little too self-assured. Go figure.
As for the image consultant, the problem was that I did not like her image: fishnet stockings, very high heels shoes, red skirt, black iridescent top and short black jacket. The clothing looked quite cheap to me, the sort of thing you can find at H&M. I did not like her hair (in all fairness, yesterday was one of those universal bad hair days - mine was certainly not at its best either) and I really hated her lipstick. Also, she did not smile enough for me. I have to confess she won my heart later on when she recognized that a smile is the most important thing and that unfortunately she is not the type of person who can smile constantly. Too bad. I like people who smile a lot.
The hair stylist was going through a horrifying bad hair day and had his long long hair tied back in a half ponytail. It looked greasy to me but again, nobody had decent hair yesterday. On the other hand, he seemed like a very nice, approachable guy and when I got a chance to talk to him after the session I really liked his suggestions to me, especially because where everybody wants me to go lighter, he said I should go darker at at the ends and a little lighter on top. At least he understood my bizarre hair color and said I have the kind of hair that, when left longer, goes "beach blonde". He also thought I should keep my hair off my face.
The seminar consisted of the four of them explaining what they do, then choosing two people from the audience and going through them from head to toe. Very interesting. All of them seemed to know their stuff. I changed my mind about the image consultant when I got to chat with her for a minute or so after the seminar. I might have not liked her style, but she seemed to know how to help others get the style they are after. I will probably use her services in the near future.
Gotta sleep now. More details to come.

Went to this "extreme make-over" seminar at the Learning Annex: a hairstylist, two plastic surgeons and an image consultant. A blast! But the details will have to wait until tomorrow. I need to be up early tomorrow for a dentist appointment.

I worked after 8:30 PM yesterday and then joined B., her boyfriend and Mario, at LImpero for a drink. From there we (minus Mario) went for some cheapo Mexican food with to-kill-for mango margaritas at this little joint on 2nd Ave. ...
Tonight it looks like I will be roaming the bars with Blanca. Life is so tough.

Things are back on track. After a perfectly useless PMS week-end I have now plans for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings, not to mention lunch tomorrow. Also, Pilar will be back in town on Saturday May 31, and we are picking her up at the airport. That's exciting. Serge and his girlfriend are visiting from CA. on June 3rd and on June 6th it's Bob's birthday party. Sometime in early June hubby will be here too. Now we're talking.

Just finished the 30' basic Urban Rebounding video. Boy, hard to believe I am the same person who was taking two cardio classes back-to-back a year ago! I was able to finish the tape but I wasn't keeping the best of forms, to say the least. The good news is I don't feel like I should crawl back to bed and call it a day.
Yesterday I ordered vegetarian red curry from a nearby Thai place (my third Thai red curry of the week) and happily stayed home channel surfing. My DSL was down once again and I, again, I complained. They are coming to check the phone line on Monday or Tuesday and if they cannot pinpoint the problem I will be cancelling the service. I am thinking of going with Verizon to take advantage of the WiFi hotspots.

Plans got even worse. Had to cancel dinner too. They want to eat before the movies. That'd not dinner to me. It's high tea. Specially on a Saturday. Also, a 45 minutes dinner it's just not enough to enjoy your food. It barely qualifies as a lets-grab-a-bite-before-the-movie and I'd rather decline. Now ... I have to decide whether to order food in, watch America's Most Wanted and then some pay-per-view or start calling around to see who is available.

6:55 PM

No movies for me tonight. The girls want to go to the Lincoln Plaza theaters. I declined. I am so not interested in an " ultra-realistic portrait of social decay in contemporary Eastern Europe" (I swear to God, this is the enticing description of one of the movies!). Debra asked if there was a movie I would like to see instead. Of course! I'd love to see The Matrix Reloader! Yet I am painfully aware of the microscopic chance of reconciling my taste in movies with that of Lincoln Plaza's habituees. I also know that if I do agree to tag along I will hate every minute of it and the aftermovie discussion will turn sour, with me loudly claiming to have been cheated out of a decent car race. It's safer to meet them afterwards for dinner. Lets hope Leslie and her friend are not into French cuisine.

6:07 PM

I am using iStumbler to sniff wireless networks with my iBook from my bedroom. I am getting quite a few, some are home lans, some are office networks, even the UNDP wireless lan. So far all have required passwords that I will not try to hack. All I am looking for is a free WiFi that I can piggyback on.

2:04 PM

Oh, my poor old aching body ... I am almost happy that Melissa is not answering the phone so I can stay at home this afternoon. Tonight I am going out with Debra, Debras friend Leslie and a friend of Leslies. In the meantime I am hopping on the rebounder for a bit and then fixing myself a salad.

1:28 PM

My feet are killing me. I had this pair of great Charles Jourdan high-heel pumps that I put on after dinner, on my way to Splash. After less than half and hour of intense pain and not being able to jump around the dance floor I had to slip them off and put back my ugly no non-sense sandals. I danced and danced and danced. Ming danced and danced and danced. He took off his t-shirt, as per the house dress code. I did not take off mine, though I was ready to do it and cry discrimination if somebody objected.
I had fun as usual, except for a few minutes when a very confused gay guy came over to me like a freight train and tried to shove his tongue down my throat. Needless to say, he did not get his way, but getting licked by a total stranger does not turn me on. He then proceeded to rub every inch of himself against me and a few minutes later, after this fleeting heterosexual moment (there is no way, no matter how drunk or stoned he was, that he could confuse me with a man), tried to french kiss (freedom kiss?) some dude.
I tried to send an audioblog twice but I could not hear the instruction. You'll get to listen to the music next time.

Friday, May 16, 2003

I had every intention of staying home tonight and working on my website, not to mention adding bits of my old website that I found floating around on the Internet. But then Ming called and I am in a rush to change into something warmer and meet him for dinner and a good time at Splash. I will be the one with the fluo gel in her hair.

6:43 PM

What happens when you have a dinner party on a Thusday night? The cleaning lady calls in sick on Friday morning.

9:53 AM

Mario has been a little down for the last few days so I invited him over for dinner. Then Blanca, my new colleague, mentioned something about going out for a drink and I invited her over for dinner. Then I talked to Debra, who gets physical therapy just around the corner from my place, and I invited her over for dinner too. A dinner party on a Thursday night seems like the perfect thing to do: my cleaning lady comes on Fridays. I left work a little over 6 PM and rushed to the Amish Market to buy the ingredients and then to a liquor store to get some wine.
We had rice cakes sauteed in soy sauce and hot peanut oil and wrapped in seaweed sheets, endives with tofu salmon spread and caviar, lemon sole filets with cajun spices and a mesclum, arugula and tomato salad. Wine was a couple of bottles of Sangre de Toro and some excellent Chilean wine Debra brought. Problem is I forgot about dessert. Fortunately there was some leftover fruit salad that Pam had made. Not bad for an impromptu dinner. But that Sangre de Toro sure is strong ...

Tuesday night I met with Debra for dinner at a Thai restaurant. The food was so good I almost licked the sauce off the plate.
Yesterday I was at the office until around 9 PM so I had to cancel my appointment with Johanny and opted for a late after work drink with Francia and Miguel
Today might be another late day at work. I have a pile of things to take care of at home but I can't seem to find the time nor the will to do it.
My brother sent me a couple of extremely politically incorrect sites. I've checked one of them and as soon as I check the other I will decide whether to include a link to them here.

This is so cool!

10:18 PM

Had an hour long videoconference with Ghego and Julie and the kids in Lyon (France) today. Although we had to hold the audio part on the phone, the video was great. Last time I used the software (downloadable for free from www.ivisit.com) I used the mike too and after a little tweaking it went great.
After Lyon, Pam and I called Monica and Raoul in Rome and spent another half an hour on the phone, though we could not convince Monica to install the software.
Eventually we managed to leave the house on this dreary foggy Sunday day, and after a stop to get my first Mystic Tan (I loved the experience!), we went sheet buying at Bloomingdales. I needed, and got, a fresh new solid white set for my bed.
Before coming back home we stopped for some vegan friendly Mexican food at Burritoville, plus a mango margarita that just about killed me. Came home with a stack of junk magazines and candy and fell asleep until now. Nice going for a Sunday!

A NY story: a guy found Pam's wallet in the cab. He called Pam's mom in D.C., she called us with the guy's number. Pam calls him and tells him she does not know how to thank him, but that we would like to invite him out for a drink. He says he would hate to pass on an invitation for a drink so basically the three of us are going out tomorrow evening. To be continued.

I got my AirPort card! A trip to the Apple Store and I came back with the card - which I already installed - and a SmartDisk universal card reader - which I have already used to transfer pictures from my Compact Flash card to my iMac. This is the third, yup, third card reader I buy but one was for the wrong type of card and the other one I can't find. Problem is I want to get rid of OS 9 on my iBook but I need to be able transfer pictures from the digital camera to the iBook and OS X won't recognize 64 MB cards, so I absolutely had to buy this new gizmo. After the shopping spree I got this phone call from JP. I told him what I had bought, he made a comment about how necessary it was for me to get a wireless card, given that I have Internet connection at work and DSL at home. It is not necessary, of course, it's just that I was starting to feel completely left out from this WiFi trend. I can't wait to go to a hotspot tomorrow and try it out! Anyways, JP second comment was vintage JP. He asked me if having this card made me happy. I said yes. He said good. Can't help but love a man like that.
After the Apple store Pam and I had dinner at TeaNY. Moby arrived a little later and by the time we left he had been playing scrabble with a bunch of friends for quite a while. Now, I really don't care for his music, but his food is excellent. The place is tiny and the patrons are either weird looking (there was this guy today in full make-up, with deep deep red lipstick and an extravagant black outfit - mind you, he was not in drag, he was dressed as a man, sort of, with a big hat on top of his head and he was enjoying the company of a pretty redhead) or Japanese (I suspect it must be on some Japanese tourist guide for girls), but the sandwiches, the spread and the cakes are delicious. We had a vegan cheesecake today and it was so good I asked wether it was possible to buy the whole cake.
Time to get to bed and read Wired magazine.
On the flip side, Pam lost her wallet in a cab, but she just came back with hysterical stories about comparing coats with a policewoman at the precinct. You can always count on women to gab about clothing in the most unlikely situations.

I am falling asleep. Fast. After work Pam and I dashed to this thrift shop for Housing Works . Vogue's editor at large, Andre Leon Talley had picked a few of the items and had done the windows. Jonathan introduced us to him, Pam got photographed (she looked wonderful in one of her offbeat getups). From the store we got bussed to the Housing Works used books shop where Talley read a chapter of his book and answered some questions (a couple of them particularly obnoxious but Talley himself is quite a good storyteller and a likable character, though a tad on the flamboyant side). After our cultural moment we went to this Tibetan restaurant on West Houston. It was closed and we ended up having a not particularly good dinner at Green Papaya. I had been there before and the food was better. And now all I want is to get some sleep.

11:51 PM

Up at 5:30 AM today, I've been e-mailing back and forth with Rosina. I've also been spent an inordinate amount of time going through Craig's list, everything for apartments for rent to missed connections. The site is fascinating.
Yesterday I had dinner at Elmo's . Please go check out the white bartender. Gorgeous. And nice and funny and he even brought my martini with sugar and cinnamon to my table. One of these pretty pretty boys with the wholesome face and the to die for body. Totally gay, of course. This was Chelsea, after all. The food was uneven, some dishes were very good, others so and so, but the coconut cake ... ah! the coconut cake was fantastic! I also had a cherry margarita. The waiter - very nice too but not nearly as beatiful as the bartender ... actually, he was downright homely - told me I was going to be a guinny pig, the very first customer to order the atomic cherry margarita and that he would get me something else should I not like it. Well, it certainly tasted nothing like cherry and it had a funny aftertaste but other than that it was ok.
I got home at about midnight and Pam arrived at almost one o' clock. Unfortunately I did not get to talk to her much as I was falling asleep (I did gte up at 5:30 yesterday too, and was at the gym by 7:15).
Time to get on the rebounder now.

Just heard it on TV. Lets set the record straight: I cannot say what really happened on Friday as I went out to a Japanese restaurant for lunch (and payed for it) and was back and working away in my office when all this looting was going on, but what I do know not to be true is the part that goes "Earlier that day, food workers were told some employees would not receive vacation pay due them". I know for a fact the employees had been fighting for a while to get their vacation time/money. The strike was a last ditch protest more than anything else. As for the rest, I can't wait to get the dirt tomorrow. I also can't wait to see what the new caterer has in store for us. As a vegetarian, I am not too optimistic.

11:51 PM

Still working on that skin. Haven't made up my mind yet.

Yesterday I went shopping for clothes. Bought a bunch of black things to perfect what my husband calls "the Vietnamese look", mainly black pants or long skirt with a black long tunic/top. A perfect look for somebody who does not want to bother with her look but who cares enough about it not to want to look like somebody she is not, if that makes any sense.

Anyways, today I went back to the store to return a few of the things I had bought yesterday and to pick up a couple of new ones. Now, if I could only do the same with body parts ...

After shopping I had dinner with Debra at Nino's Positano, just around the corner. Emilio, who is a regular at the restaurant, told me Derek Jeters, who lives at the Trump Building a couple of blocks away, eats there several times a week. Unfortunately he was not there yesterday, but the food was terrific. Debra and I were both in a grandiose mood so we each had a couple of perfect margaritas and after a salad we shared a wonderful lobster with linguine fra diavolo. I am afraid I will be a regular customer too.

Not much got accomplished today, mostly because I've been having a nagging headache/shoulder pain since Friday, that has not been helped by my spending dozen of hours on the computer. I did rebound a while this morning, and that seems to help. The rest of the day, except for the run to the shop to return part of the Vietnamese look, was spent drawing a cartoon of myself and playing around with blog skins. Pam will be arriving tomorrow. Tuesday she has THE interview, the one she has been waiting for months and we are all very excited about it.

Serendipity. You'd better believe in it! Last week I asked Blanca, a former colleague who has now moved to Brussels to help me locate Cheo, an interpreter who works in Brussels too and is married to Rosina, a very dear friend of mine. Mind you, I haven't heard from them in several years, since they moved from Barcelona to Brussels. So, a day later Blanca send me an answer, telling me that a girl she works with is friend's with Cheo's and providing me with his phone number. But it does not end here. To my amazement I also get, on the very same day, an e-mail from my sister in Montevideo telling me Rosina had tried to e-mail me but that the message had bounced back. I thought it was strange that Rosina had my sister's e-mail address but didn't really give it a second thought, I just assumed she had heard I was looking for her, got my e-mail address wrong and then wrote my sister to get it right. That would have been a complicated way of getting around it but I let it at that. Well, what actually happened is that my sister accidentally bumped into Rosina in Montevideo las week. Now, what are the chance of this happening? I love it when these things happen, and they seem to happen often.

Time to get on my rebounder and then figure out were I will be taking Melissa today.

I cant believe I am falling for The Bachelor show. I am getting stupider by the minute ...

Today we had not one but two get-togethers at the office. One was a baby shower for a girl whos so pregnant I was afraid she was going to give birth right then and there. Actually she looks so fantastic she should consider being permanently pregnant.
The second one was much smaller, just a goodbye toast for a lady who has been promoted and is relocating to Europe.
After the drink and the goodbyes I stayed over to talk to one of my colleagues. I am so used to not sharing my coworkers interests (and this is a deliberate understatement - most of the time we might as well come from different planets) that I was stunned to find out he too has a passion for true crime. We somehow started talking about on line friendships and went on to the true-crime forum on Compuserve back in the good ol days. I was amazed to learn that he unfailingly followed, as I did, the OJ trial but while I was completely satisfied with checking out Nicoles house in Brentwood and the Mezza Luna restaurant (something I did in the middle of the night I was staying with friends in Laguna Beach, CA, and the very moment one of them, Eduardo the one that considered this obsession with the murders utterly ridiculous - left on a trip, Benji and I hopped on the car and rushed to L.A. to make the rounds) he got to work with OJ's defense lawyer at the civil trial. He met him on the forum and eventually was invited to Santa Monica to watch OJs deposition. I asked him if he had met my idol, Dominick Dunne, but he had not. Me might go out for a drink on Friday after work and I am not anticipating one single boring moment.

I am trying to write this while glued to the television watching Extreme Makeover . It is truly mesmerizing.
Tomorrow I am going for a make-up session with Jeanine Lobell, wife of Anthony Edwards of E.R.s fame but, more to the point, Stilas founder. If she makes me look stunning I might stay out and prowl the bars.
